DIY Bedframe-Part 2

Welcome back!! August has been the craziest month for us and I can't even tell you how happy we both are that it is over. We were finally able to finish our bed. It came out so beautiful, but unfortunately for my amazing husband I am a little too large to be helping too much with our wood projects. I have been deemed the foreman of any of our projects telling him what to do and the measurements needed. Not to mention that I would not recommend working outside in August, especially while 6 months pregnant.

It took us a while to decide what we wanted to for what we have dubbed the bed skirt. Everything we came up with was too complicated or expensive. We then needed to make the bookshelf bench for our nursery and had a great idea. We were going to use plywood for our bench and decided to just carry that out into our bed skirt too.

We did a few measurements and realized that the plywood we needed was too wide for our Highlander. So, we had to put it on top of our Corolla. I was so excited to finally have a large enough vehicle when we went to pick up our wood from the lumber yard, but it still wasn't big enough and again had to take the little car. I'm sure you can imagine the stares and laughs we got with a 6 month pregnant woman and her husband pull up to the lumber yard in their Corolla surrounded by all of the pick up trucks. If you can't imagine it, check this out then...

Once we got home and my husband unloaded the plywood off the top of the Corolla we were able to start making our cuts! There aren't a lot of pictures to follow along with because I kept getting too hot and having to go inside.

DIY Bedskirt

Supplies:

3/4" plywood

1x2" pine

Nails

Wood Screws

Wood filler

L-brackets with screws

Sander with sand paper

Same stain from headboard

Sponge brush

Directions:

1. Measure the height of the bed frame and box spring.

2. Cut out the plywood to the correct height and length needed for your bed. Miter one side of the plywood. Repeat on the other side.

3. Use the same height, but measure the width of the bed for the length. Miter both sides of the plywood to fit together.

4. Use the same measurements to cut out the 1x2". Line up the edge of the 1x2" on the outside edge. Nail the 1x2" board onto the top of the plywood sinking them slightly. Be sure that the 2 sides are opposite of each other.

5. Put wood filler in the nail holes to hide them.

6. Sand everything so there are rounded corners.

7. Stain your pieces. When dry carry them to your bed frame to attach everything.

8. Attach the side pieces pieces to the headboard with your wood screws. Sink them enough so they are flat against the plywood.

9. Use the L-brackets to attach the foot piece.

10. Once everything is attached and sturdy, put your bed back together.

For less than $200 we were able to make a custom king side bed! I love how it looks like it's a platform bed, but secretly it's not. We looked around forever to try and find a bed and they are outrageously expensive, but we just built one with a little bit sweat and only a few bad words. If we can do it, so can you! And you really don't need to get a super expensive bed frame, we spent $50 and it has been perfect.

What do you think? You brave enough to give it a shot for yourself now?
